The most concrete means to
inform the student of their academic performance is through report card
comments. Writing comments is a valuable teacher tool
especially at elementary level, because it explains what the numerical
or letter grade means as well as gives recommendations for the
student’s growth. Report card examples are widely available through
teacher resource websites.

Report Card Comments
A teacher may choose from hundreds of report card phrases, whether
general or specific. Resources of report card remarks are categorized
into different lengths, year levels, subjects, including work habits
and personality, as well as approach. Some comments are directed to
parents while some, particularly in older year levels, are directed to
students. Although most are suggestive, it is advised that descriptive
yet positive statements be used.
Writing report card comments may prove bothersome and tiring for new
teachers, but they need not pressure themselves with fulfilling such
requirements. There is nothing difficult about making comments, because
of the widespread availability of report card examples and sample
report card remarks to serve as their basis. In fact, writing report
card comments is beneficial not only to the student but to the educator
as well – by knowing the student better and in assessing the educator’s
teaching skills, based on the outcome of the students progress.
For students and parents, receiving the child’s report card may be
tension-filled or even traumatic. This is another good use of
report
card comments – being descriptive, both parent and child
understand the
grades better, see an explanation of why such a grade is acceptable,
and is given recommendations. It advises the student not only on how to
improve their grades, but hopefully, how to improve their character and
habits.
As for the parent, the report card remarks make them not just a passive
participant in the child’s education, but an active partner with the
teacher in the growth of their child.
A teacher’s job ends
in not only computing the student’s grades but
more so, evaluating what the child knows or does not know. Hence report
cards now are not only limited to number or letter grades, but includes
report card comments – remarks that are supposed to be short and
straight to the point but also positive and encouraging. Numbers may be
interpreted in many ways and it is the remarks that give light to these
grades.
Report comments assess a student’s weaknesses and strengths –
qualities that may be difficult to express in mere numbers or letter
grades only. The internet is rich in sources for these comments and the
teacher may use the same comment for different children. What makes it
personal, is the combination of report card remarks (since there is
usually more than one comment in a report card) and the true meaning
and intent of the teacher regarding his or her evaluation of the
student’s learning achievements.
Every educator is advised to resort to new and acceptable means of
grading a student - not only presenting grades as they are, but to also
use card comments - which is beneficial in weighing the
student’s achievements, as well as suggesting further venues for their
development.
