Creative Flat Stanley Activities
For Students

There are many Flat Stanley activities that may be utilized by teachers in promoting literacy and camaraderie among students in different schools. The first Flat Stanley worksheets were started in 1955 to encourage letter-writing by young students to each other. It eventually evolved into a powerful teaching tool in many primary educational systems. Flat Stanley Lesson plans are now being edited and made flexible to cover different areas of early and middle childhood education programs.

The Flat Stanley books revolve around the story of a character named Stanley Lambchop. While asleep, Stanley gets flattened by a bulletin board that falls from the wall behind his bed. This is where the Flat Stanley adventures begin, as Stanley makes the most of his flattened state and regularly engages in many activities. He visits and plays with his friends and does many other things that only a flat person can do. The variety and uniqueness of his situation makes him an ideal tool for many classroom activities.

The Flat Stanley project began in 1995 and was introduced by Dale Hubert, a teacher in Canada. The participants in the project are required to make a Flat Stanley cut out and an accompanying journal. The Flat Stanley lesson is commenced by the passing on of the cut out and journal to other schools. Students are told to treat Flat Stanley as a guest visitor and to write in the journals while Flat Stanley is in their possession. They are encouraged to put a Flat Stanley letter as well as Flat Stanley photos inside the journal.

As the journal is passed on, many Flat Stanley ideas emerge. Students can attach mementos of the “travels” of Flat Stanley which they can share to subsequent holders of the journal. They can also write down Flat Stanley questions which later students can then answer. All the Flat Stanley activities are properly documented in the journal. Every time it is a student’s turn to write his own input, he learns what the previous students have learned and he is also able to hone his own writing and letter-making skills.

A well-structured Flat Stanley template is crucial in making an effective activity plan for educators. This may be downloaded from various lesson plan websites and teacher resources online. They are also available in education centers that offer MYP, PYP, and IBO lesson planners. Institutions offering International Baccalaureate teaching tools are also well-equipped with modules focused on teaching Flat Stanley to primary school students. This has indeed gone a long way from being just a singular classroom activity.

A Flat Stanley unit can be the key to effective classroom learning and to the cultivation of a diverse educational experience for the students. It will be helpful for educators to make use of the different Flat Stanley activities already existing and yet to be developed. They not only make learning fun but also encourage the contribution of knowledge and information among students from different regions and countries all over the world. Flat Stanley planners should be utilized effectively and creatively to promote literacy and collective learning.
