Benefits of Using Curriculum
Mapping Software

Different types of curriculum mapping software are now increasingly being used by educators, lecturers and teachers in various academic fields. A curriculum map is a tool currently utilized to review and revise the curriculum of a particular course with ease and efficiency.

Templates for curriculum mapping can be found in online databases and academic websites which provide for the proper procedures on reviewing an existing curriculum. Curriculum mapping is now the trend in every educational setting.

School curriculum mapping is becoming a widespread practice because of the flexibility it offers for the revision of the curriculum. It highly involves the teacher’s individual participation.

The teacher has to input their teaching experience for a particular school year in a curriculum mapping template, in the school’s electronic database. This can then be viewed and access by other authorized academic bodies. Other educators may write their own experience and put in their respective comments or reactions to the inputs of others.

Curriculum mapping has changed the way lessons are planned and programmed in many learning institutions. Instead of viewing the curriculum as a permanent and stable source of the lessons, it should now be seen as flexible, consistently evolving and a continuing process. The curriculum map can be changed as often as possible, depending on the changing needs and interests of the students and the demands of the subject. This increases the adaptability of the lesson plans for greater learning efficiency.

Many International Baccalaureate programs have turned to curriculum mapping as a means of revising and updating their curriculum programs. MYP, PYP and IBO lesson projects also utilize curriculum mapping templates in ensuring the efficiency of their classroom applications. Most primary school educators use a specialized elementary curriculum mapping format to target the special needs of young students.

There are seven steps involved in organizing a curriculum mapping software. The educators must first prepare a draft for a single content area and make the necessary research and assessment of the courses and the student group to be taught. A team is then formed to study the initial assessments made and the draft that was created. The feedback of each team member is taken note of and recorded.

A read-through is then conducted to review the information gathered during the first step. Further reviews are performed by small groups subsequently formed for the same purpose. Team members openly discuss their observations and findings during these reviews. It is here where the prospective revisions are noted for future editing of the curriculum. After the completion of all the designated reviews, a single document is prepared. This document embodies all the data acquired during the team sessions.

A larger group is formed to initiate the changes that need to be made to the curriculum. The members here make further suggestions which are immediately incorporated in the revisions. Further studies can be made if deemed necessary by the group. Special teams may be formed to conduct additional research and data-gathering. The last step involves the repetition of the cycle. This final step is essential and quite expected given the continuous and on-going nature of  curriculum mapping software.
