Teaching IB Maths
Effectively

IB maths education is a structured and comprehensive mathematics learning course in schools which offer International Baccalaureate programs. It covers four major study options such as higher level mathematics, standard level math, mathematical methods and Mathematical studies.

These areas of study are covered by many learning resources which also offer free math worksheets and free math lesson plans. The resource websites also provide for different classroom math activities.

Mathematics lesson plans comprise of seven mandatory core topics and four optional subjects. The required topics include number and algebra, calculus, functions and equations, probability, circular functions and trigonometry, statistics, vector geometry and matrices and transformations. The four optional subjects cover Euclidian geometry and conic sections, sets, relations and groups and discrete mathematics. These different areas should be explored for a more comprehensive teaching of this broad subject.

Maths teachers must know the objective of the program. These goals may include imparting knowledge and understanding of the different mathematical processes and reasoning devices. Students must also acquire the ability to evaluate the implications of the results for a better application of the mathematical formulas.

After a mastery of the basic concepts, students can now focus on improving their strategies for solving problems which are unique but which rise very often. Teachers may use fun math lesson plans to achieve these goals.

An International Baccalaureate math internal assessment is recommended for math instructors. Teachers are to give project assignments or portfolio worksheets to students, which will give much leeway for the latter to pursue their distinct interests and level of knowledge. This will help the teachers assess which subjects should be included in the IB math standard for the improvement of the math curriculum. The goal of the IB math project is to evaluate which topics should be included in future mathematics classes in the IB program.

Teachers must carefully choose the IB math hl and sl textbooks that they will use in conducting classes. They should choose materials which fit the knowledge level and learning progress of the students in the program.

If an IB assessment is necessary for determining the appropriate materials to be used in a program, such should be conducted ahead of time so that more students will evaluate from the improvements brought about by prior evaluation. Teachers must always foster a conducive learning environment for the students.

The curriculum for the MYP, PYP and IBO programs require a specialized study of the different age groups that comprise the student population. Teachers should also explore new ways of presenting the subject and must from time to time veer away from the usual textbooks, and use the many resources available online and in other academic databases. This will allow for a more eclectic teaching environment where students are allowed to explore the different concepts and strategies related to the subject.

In order to teach IB maths effectively, teachers must continually possess the stamina, diligence and creativity required to impart knowledge and understanding of the complicated yet manageable subject. Students must also be encouraged to learn through the use of different academic methods and learning styles.
